Rep. Jamie Raskin, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Maryland’s 8th district since 2017, posted a series of tweets addressing constitutional principles, political actions in Washington, and the legacy of civil rights leader John Lewis.

On July 16, 2025, Raskin wrote: "The most important words of the Constitution are the first three: We the People. In America, the people are sovereign, and those of us who aspire and attain to public office are nothing but the servants of the people. Any officials who act as kings, dictators or lords should be".

The following day, on July 17, 2025, he criticized Republican lawmakers in Washington for their fiscal policies: "Insatiable greed from Republicans in DC who aren't satisfied with the giant corporate tax breaks funded by prying away health care from 17 million Americans. They want to stage yet another ruling-class financial riot against the American people."

Later that same day, Raskin marked a national observance dedicated to John Lewis by posting: "On this John Lewis National Day of Action, we remember John’s determination to put his body, heart and mind in the way of injustice and oppression. Honor this hero of the Civil Rights Movement by making good trouble to defend democracy and freedom."

Jamie Raskin has represented Maryland's 8th District in Congress since succeeding Chris Van Hollen in 2017. Before serving in Congress, he was a member of both the Maryland House of Representatives and Maryland Senate between 2007 and 2016. Born in Washington D.C. in 1962 and currently residing in Takoma Park at age 60, Raskin is an alumnus of Harvard University with both undergraduate and law degrees.
