City of Rockville Cultural Arts Commission met April 11.

Sara Moline, Chairperson, called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. in the Black-Eyed Susan Room at Rockville City Hall.

Re: Approval of the Minutes

The Cultural Arts Commission unanimously approved the minutes for the March 14, 2018 meeting.

Re: Chairperson’s Report

Sara Moline reported the following items.

1. She was present for the appointment of Tim Nixon to the Cultural Arts Commission by the Mayor and Council of Rockville at their meeting on April 9.

2. She attended a meeting of emerging art leaders on March 23; First Friday at Artists and Makers in Rockville on April 6; and a reception for the Student Art Show/Art Walk at Montgomery College on April 11.

Re: Councilmember Report

Councilmember Mark Pierzchala reported on the following items.

1. He attended the International Night on March 23 at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre.

2. Montgomery County, City of Rockville and the KID Museum are working on a new location for the museum since their programming needs cannot be met in the current space at Davis Library.

3. A budget worksession for Fiscal Year 2019 Operating Budget and Capital Improvements Program is scheduled on April 23.

4. The City Clerk/Director of Council Operations has received 20 Expression of Interest Applications for the Boards and Commissions Task Force.

5. He provided background on his request for VisArts to submit a proposal for an Arts and Culture Study that he could introduce to his colleagues at the worksession on April 23 for consideration for funding in the Fiscal Year 2019 Operating Budget. He also provided background on Rockville Town Square and the current situation.

Re: Staff Report

Betty Wisda reported the following items.

1. The Rockville Civic Ballet was selected for the Maryland Recreation and Parks Association’s Community Organization Award for contributing outstanding service within the past two years to the recreation, parks and leisure profession.

2. The Rockville Civic Ballet had an extremely successful production of “Sleeping Beauty” with two “sold out” performances for the evening of March 17 and the afternoon of March 18 at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre. Due to popular demand, a matinee performance was added on the afternoon of March 17.

3. The opening reception for the exhibit of “The Natural World” featuring Vicky Arana’s tree paintings, Lynda Andrews Barry’s media installations and Lisa A. Tayerle’s mixed media assemblages was held on March 25 at the Glenview Mansion Art Gallery.

4. Betty Wisda is preparing information on the “Greetings from Rockville” art project for John Romeo, Urban Edge Property Manager, so he can submit the information for review by their attorneys.

5. 83 interested local, regional and national artists submitted applications for consideration for the Underpass at Park Road Art Project. The next step is for the Art Review Panel to select three finalists to create proposals.

6. Paul Waclo is scheduled from June 4 through June 8 for the fabrication phase of the tree carving art project at Horizon Hill Park. A brief ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 7 at the park.

Re: Task Force/Committee Updates

Art in Public Places

George McHugh, Chairperson, reported that the Art in Public Places Committee met to discuss the Public Artwork Condition Assessment. The committee will be present recommendations to the Cultural Arts Commissioners at their meeting on June 13.

Culture and Entertainment Plan

Mary Baltimore distributed a proposal for a study for Arts and Culture in the City of Rockville prepared and supported by the stakeholders of the Culture and Entertainment Plan Committee. The Cultural Arts Commissioners agreed to review the proposal and submit via email their support or non-support of the proposal and any comments to Betty Wisda by April 15.
