City of Rockville Cultural Arts Commission met March 14.

Here is the minutes provided by the Commission:

Other: Tim Nixon, Lena Ousvatova Sara Moline, Chairperson, called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. in the Black-Eyed Susan Room at Rockville City Hall.

Re: Introduction of Applicant for Cultural Arts Commissioners

Tim Nixon introduced himself and highlighted his interest in the arts and humanities as well as his desire to serve as a member of the Cultural Arts Commission.

Re: Approval of the Minutes

The Cultural Arts Commission unanimously approved the minutes for the February 14, 2018 meeting.

Re: Chairperson’s Report

Sara Moline reported the following items.

1. She attended the Culture and Entertainment Plan Meeting with Stakeholders on February 15 at Glenview Mansion and a lecture on Creative Entrepreneur presented by Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts at Artist and Makers in Rockville.

2. She noted an article by Ellen Ryan regarding the concept of board games and that Tabletop Day is April 28.

Re: Councilmember Report

Councilmember Mark Pierzchala reported that Kathleen Conway, City Clerk/Director of Council Operations, has received several Expression of Interest Forms from applicants for consideration to be appointed to the Boards and Commissions Task Force. He also requested that the Cultural Arts Commissioners provide him with a proposal to fund a study relating to culture and arts impacting economic development and other items for the City of Rockville. The study should include cultural arts plans of cities with similar populations of Rockville that have impacted their economic development. His plan is to introduce the proposed study to the Mayor and Council for consideration of inclusion of this study in the FY2019 Budget at the Work Session scheduled on April 23.

Betty Wisda reported the following items.

1. Under the direction of John Saint Amour, the Rockville Concert Band presented “Medieval Times” on March 11 at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre.

2. The Wine and Film Series featuring “Fifi Howls from Happiness” was held on March 13 at the Glenview Mansion.

Re: Task Force/Committee Updates

Art in Public Places

George McHugh, Chairperson, provided an update on the Horizon Hill Park Art Project and the “Greetings” art project.

The Art in Public Places Committee recommended the removal of the black and white photographs of City employees at work in the Diamondback Terrapin Room and that the photographs be given to the department heads related to the staff function for display in their office areas or be archived with other City items. The Cultural Arts Commissioners unanimously agreed with this recommendation.

The Art in Public Places Committee will meet in March to discuss the Public Artwork

Condition Assessment.

Re: Cultural Arts Commission’s Visions and Goals

The Cultural Arts Commissioners discussed the revised vision statement. The Commissioners agreed to send Betty Wisda additional edits to the vision statement prior to the next meeting.

Several members made announcements regarding their personal or their organization’s upcoming events.

The next meetings will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11 in the Black-Eyed Susan Room at Rockville City Hall.
