Rep. Jamie Raskin, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Maryland’s 8th district since 2017, posted a series of tweets on August 1, 2025, addressing issues ranging from federal education policy to local community recognition and animal welfare legislation.

In his first tweet at 17:45 UTC, Raskin criticized Secretary McMahon’s actions at the Department of Education: "Secretary McMahon is throwing the Department of Education in the trash because President Trump told her to. Now, she's overseeing one of ED's largest mass firings yet.

We must defend America’s students, teachers and schools against MAGA's corrupt agenda." (August 1, 2025)

Later that day at 18:30 UTC, Raskin announced support for the BARK Act from New York City’s “official Dog Mayor”: "MAJOR ENDORSEMENT FOR THE BARK ACT: we’ve won the support of 'Mayor Simon,' NYC’s official Dog Mayor, for the BARK Act, our legislation to feed hungry shelter pets.

Let’s pass this bi-paw-tisan bill with no barking or biting. My conversation with Mayor Simon (and @svershbow):" (August 1, 2025)

In a third post at 19:29 UTC, Raskin recognized two community members for their environmental efforts: "This week's MD-08 Local Heroes are Elaine Lamirande and Kit Gage of Friends of Sligo Creek. We honor their daily commitment to preserving and beautifying the Creek even through the ravages of climate change, heavy rainfall and flooding." (August 1, 2025)

Raskin has represented Maryland's 8th District in Congress since succeeding Chris Van Hollen in 2017. Before his tenure in Congress, he served in both chambers of Maryland's state legislature from 2007 to 2016. Born in Washington D.C. in 1962 and currently residing in Takoma Park, Raskin holds degrees from Harvard University and Harvard Law School.
