Rep. Jamie Raskin, a U.S. Congressman representing Maryland's 8th district since 2017, recently shared his thoughts on democracy and political accountability through a series of tweets. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1962, Raskin has a long history of public service, having served in the Maryland Senate from 2007 to 2016 before his current role in Congress.

On June 3, 2025, Raskin quoted philosopher John Dewey to emphasize the need for more democracy as a solution to its challenges. He stated "John Dewey said that the only solution to the ills of democracy is more democracy, and what we are suffering from today is not democracy but all the impediments and obstacles to it—and all the attacks on it."

Later that day, Raskin addressed an incident involving Congressman Nadler’s District Office. He expressed concern over what he described as an "outrageous violation" and called for accountability by stating "This outrageous violation of the work of Congressman Nadler’s District Office and frightful mistreatment of his staff cannot stand. We are demanding a hearing on why this happened and who is responsible. They must be held accountable."

In another tweet posted on June 3, Raskin criticized former President Donald Trump's claims regarding his political mandate. He argued against Trump's broader policy ambitions by saying "Trump’s adamant claim that he has a mandate to dismantle everything from birthright citizenship to Due Process to Medicaid to the professional civil service is farcical. He campaigned on lowering the cost of eggs and electricity. If he has a slim mandate, that’s what it is."

Jamie Raskin continues his legislative work while residing in Takoma Park after graduating from Harvard University with both a BA and JD.
