Rep. Jamie Raskin, who has been serving in the U.S. Congress representing Maryland’s 8th district since 2017, recently expressed his strong opposition to several policies proposed by the GOP and former President Donald Trump through a series of tweets. Born in Washington, D.C., Raskin has a distinguished educational background with degrees from Harvard University and Harvard Law School.

On May 22, 2025, Raskin criticized a GOP initiative, describing it as a "monstrosity" that allegedly takes resources from vulnerable groups such as children, families, and seniors to provide tax breaks for billionaires. He stated: "There’s nothing ‘big’ or ‘beautiful’ about that. It's petty and ugly. And we’re voting HELL NO."

In another tweet posted on the same day, Raskin addressed promises made by Trump regarding Medicare. He highlighted concerns about potential cuts exceeding $500 million due to a billionaire tax plan that could significantly increase the deficit: "Trump promised not to cut Medicare, but his billionaire tax heist adds so much to the deficit that it will likely trigger more than $500 million in Medicare cuts." He further noted the disparity between wealth accumulation among the super-rich and financial struggles faced by seniors.

Later on May 22nd, Raskin commented on economic issues linked to tariffs implemented by Trump. Citing widespread opinions about their impact, he stated: "Many are saying" the Trump Tariffs have plunged us into a Republican Recession. Additionally, he remarked on Trump's increasing net worth since returning to office while asserting that others are not benefiting similarly.

Jamie Raskin's political career includes prior service in both chambers of Maryland's state legislature before succeeding Chris Van Hollen in Congress. His critiques reflect ongoing debates over fiscal policy and economic inequality within American politics.
