Rep. Jamie Raskin, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Maryland’s 8th district, has taken to social media to address various issues concerning federal workers and legal rights. Raskin, who succeeded Chris Van Hollen in 2017, has been vocal about the challenges faced by civil servants and the importance of due process.
On May 7, 2025, Rep. Raskin expressed concern over the plight of federal civil servants who were displaced by actions attributed to former President Trump and Elon Musk. He stated that many are now "struggling just to access their hard-earned federal benefits." Raskin called on the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to halt its practice of firing staff and instead focus on addressing the needs of retiring federal employees. "Many federal civil servants forced out by Trump and Musk’s slash-and-burn campaign are now struggling just to access their hard-earned federal benefits."
In another tweet posted later that day, Raskin highlighted the fundamental importance of due process rights for all individuals. He emphasized that if guilty individuals are denied these rights, then innocent people could also be at risk because innocence or guilt is determined through a trial or hearing. "If guilty people don't have Due Process rights, then innocent people don't have Due Process rights."
Additionally, during Public Service Recognition Week, Rep. Raskin urged for recognition and defense of federal workers who continue their duties amidst what he described as "MAGA dysfunction and sabotage." He also acknowledged those dismissed under the previous administration without cause. "During Public Service Recognition Week, let's honor and defend all federal workers who keep the wheels of government turning."
Jamie Raskin was born in Washington D.C., graduated from Harvard University with a BA in 1983, and earned a JD from Harvard Law School in 1987. He resides in Takoma Park.
