Rep. Jamie Raskin, a current U.S. Congressman representing Maryland's 8th district, expressed critical views on recent policy changes and social issues through his social media accounts on April 17, 2025. His comments reflect a focus on national economic policies and societal challenges such as gun violence.

In a tweet from April 17, Raskin addressed actions reportedly taken by former President Trump concerning financial protocols. Raskin stated, "President Trump is reportedly taking a hammer to IRS Direct File, which allows millions of Americans to file their taxes for free. Just another pathological way the White House is making life more difficult and expensive for our people". This comment highlights concerns over changes to IRS tax filing procedures that may impact American taxpayers.

Later that day, Raskin turned his attention to gun violence in the United States. He tweeted, "More casualties on the killing fields of a nation with the highest gun violence rate in the developed world. We send sympathy and solidarity to the wounded, the victims’ families, and the FSU community in the midst of this devastation". This tweet reflects a call for empathy and support for those affected by gun-related incidents, emphasizing the ongoing challenge of violence in the country.

In a follow-up tweet made shortly after, Raskin demonstrated a willingness to accept critique, writing "I’ll do my homework next time". The tweet suggests a readiness to address potential oversights and improve his engagements or perspectives.

Jamie Raskin, who began serving in Congress in 2017 after representing Maryland in the state Senate from 2007 to 2016, has a longstanding career in public service. He is a Harvard University alumnus with both a BA and JD degree and has been living in Takoma Park, Maryland.
