Rep. Jamie Raskin, currently serving as a U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 8th district, has been vocal on social media in recent days, addressing pressing political and social issues. On Twitter, Raskin expressed his views on developments concerning Social Security, due process rights, and climate research funding cuts.
On April 10, 2025, Raskin commented on efforts to preserve the Social Security Administration from perceived threats by influential figures. He remarked, "The pro-democracy movement successfully defended the Social Security Administration against Elon Musk’s chainsaw and Donald Trump's plutocratic games. We will always stand in the breach for America’s seniors and people with disabilities."
In a tweet dated April 11, 2025, Raskin addressed his concerns about due process related to Kilmar Garcia, warning against potential abuses under Trump's actions. He stated, "If Trump gets away with destroying Due Process for Kilmar Garcia, he’ll think he can sweep anyone off the street and ship them to a prison in an authoritarian state to escape our Constitution. We must heed the Supreme Court and get him back."
Later on April 11, 2025, Raskin expressed his disagreement with funding decisions affecting weather and climate research. He voiced his disapproval by saying, "What an infuriating and idiotic decision. These paralyzing cuts to weather and climate research benefit corporations that want to privatize weather information, put all Americans at risk and exacerbate the dangerous climate denialism of the administration."
Raskin, who has represented Maryland’s 8th District since 2017 after replacing Chris Van Hollen, has a long history of public service. He previously served in the Maryland Senate from 2007 to 2016 and in the Maryland House of Representatives. Raskin, 60, was born in Washington, District of Columbia, in 1962. He lives in Takoma Park and is an alumnus of Harvard University, where he obtained both his BA in 1983 and his JD from the Harvard Law School in 1987.
