Rep. Jamie Raskin, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Maryland’s 8th district, has recently addressed issues concerning federal workers and scientific research through a series of tweets. Raskin, who has been a member of Congress since 2017, replaced Chris Van Hollen and previously served in the Maryland Senate from 2007 to 2016.
On March 6, 2025, Rep. Raskin tweeted about the critical medical research conducted by federal workers at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). He stated: "Federal workers at @HHSgov conduct critical medical research for America. I led my colleagues in demanding @SecKennedy immediately reinstate illegally purged civil servants in his agency." Raskin expressed concern over job restoration for his constituents similar to actions taken by Republican members.
In another tweet on March 8, 2025, Raskin highlighted the firing of Dr. Lauren McGee, a cancer biologist with the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He shared: "My Joint Address guest Dr. Lauren McGee is a NIH cancer biologist who was summarily fired by a DOGE worker she never met during Elon Musk's Valentine's Day assault on the federal workforce." Dr. McGee was recognized as an MD08 Local Hero for her work on pediatric cancer treatment.
Later that day, Rep. Raskin reported on a rally held at the Lincoln Memorial involving numerous Marylanders alongside notable figures like Dr. Francis Collins and Bill Nye. He noted: "Today, tons of Marylanders rallied at the Lincoln Memorial with Dr. Francis Collins, Bill Nye the Science Guy and thousands of others to tell MAGA to let our expert civil servant scientists get back to work." The event emphasized support for civil servant scientists conducting essential research.
