Rep. Jamie Raskin, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Maryland’s 8th district, has voiced concerns on social media regarding actions taken by former President Donald Trump and business magnate Elon Musk. Raskin, who has been serving in Congress since 2017, has used his platform to address what he perceives as significant threats to democratic institutions and public safety.
On February 17, 2025, Rep. Raskin expressed apprehension about efforts by Trump and Musk to undermine governmental capabilities related to election security. He stated: "Trump and Musk are dismantling the government’s capacity to spot, publicize and reject interference in our elections by Russian and other autocratic agents." He urged states and citizens to prepare themselves for increased responsibilities in safeguarding elections.
Two days later, on February 19, 2025, Raskin criticized mass layoffs attributed to Elon Musk that reportedly impact essential services. He tweeted: "Indiscriminate mass layoffs by Elon Musk are ravaging key programs, depriving our people of nuclear safety inspectors, air traffic controllers and food safety inspectors." According to him, these reductions threaten democracy and harm numerous public servants' livelihoods.
In another tweet on February 19, Raskin warned against improper data handling practices under Musk's leadership. He remarked: "If you want to conduct an audit... call Elon Musk and his night crew of juvenile computer hackers." This comment highlighted his concern over potential privacy invasions under the guise of audits.
