Rep. Jamie Raskin, a U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 8th district, shared several statements on social media addressing political and societal issues. His comments were directed towards actions taken by former President Donald Trump, gun safety laws, and controversial online posts.
On February 7, 2025, Rep. Raskin commented on the dismissal of Democrat Ellen Weintraub from the Federal Election Commission by former President Donald Trump. He described this action as an "illegal dismissal," referring to it as part of Trump's ongoing "political purge." "Trump’s political purge continues with this illegal dismissal of Democrat Ellen Weintraub from the FEC."
Later that day, Rep. Raskin criticized those opposing gun safety laws while expressing concern over privacy issues involving minors having access to private data of millions of Americans. He questioned the rationale behind protecting such individuals' access to sensitive information. "It’s sweet you don’t want to 'ruin a kid’s life' (something to bear in mind next time you oppose gun safety laws), but does that mean this 'kid' should have access to the private data of tens of millions of Americans? Pathetic."
In another post on February 7, 2025, Rep. Raskin addressed certain offensive online statements and challenged readers about which ones they disagreed with. These statements included derogatory remarks against ethnic groups and violent rhetoric concerning geopolitical regions. "Which posts do you 'disagree' with — 'Normalize Indian hate,' 'I was racist before it was cool,' 'I would not mind at all if Gaza and Israel were both wiped off the face of the Earth,' or 'You could not pay me to marry outside of my ethnicity'?"
