City Of Rockville issued the following announcement on Oct. 15.
It’s an honor …
Rockville’s accomplishments toward sustainability include:
● Being named a Tree City USA for 32 consecutive years. The city maintains approximately 28,000 street trees and more than 300 acres of parkland designated as Forest Preserve. The 2040 Comprehensive Master Plan Update that was approved in August includes a goal to continue to assess tree canopy coverage, the health and condition of city forests and landscaped areas, and maintain and enhance a robust urban tree canopy. Fifty percent of the city is covered by tree canopy.
● A backyard chicken ordinance that encourages local food production by residents.
● Piloting a Montgomery County-certified Weed Warriors program, leading volunteers in safely and properly removing non-native invasive plants that reduce native biodiversity.
● Adopting legislation banning polystyrene and plastic straws.
● Providing environmental news, volunteer opportunities, events, program updates and tips and resources to promote environmental action in the city’s “Environment and Sustainability News” quarterly email newsletter.
