CITY OF GAITHERSBURG: Gaithersburg Ranks in Top Ten for Green Roof Coverage

Schoolaward2

City of Gaithersburg issued the following announcement on Aug. 1.

The City of Gaithersburg was listed among the top ten cities for the amount of square footage of registered green roofs according to a study by Green Roofs for Healthy Cities. Green roofs are defined as permanent areas of greenery on a building’s roof or mid-building patio, definitively separated from the ground.

Gaithersburg placed number 10 on the list. Washington, DC came in at number one, followed by Newark, New York City, Seattle, Portland, Toronto, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Culpeper, Va. The designations were based on a 2017 green roof survey that collected data on more than 1,000 completed projects in 39 states and five Canadian provinces. View the full report at here.

“We’re delighted that public facilities and commercial businesses in our community are joining the City of Gaithersburg in its commitment to green technology,” said Mayor Jud Ashman. “By encouraging creative architecture we’re helping to make our built environment not only more attractive, but better for the planet.”

Among their many benefits, green roofs provide a cooling effect and can help decrease heating, ventilation and HVAC use, they reduce stormwater runoff, they can play a role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and they can serve as community amenities with potential uses for such activities as gardening and recreation.
