City of Gaithersburg Police Advisory Committee met June 13.
Here is the minutes provided by the Committee:
Attendees: Carol Martin, David Weber, Diane Cabness, Doug Wagner, Josh Fischer, John Monroe, Chief Mark Sroka and Officer Dan Lane.
Absences: Andrew Bove, Charles Ferrell and Ty Hardaway.
The meeting was called to order at 7:01 p.m. and the committee approved minutes from the December meeting.
I. STAFF UPDATE
Chief Sroka spoke about the following topics;
- There will be two officers retiring from the department in June,
- Provided an update on the departments hiring process for police officer candidates and advised that there were two due to graduate in May and two will possibly be attending the academy in August,
- Advised that starting July 1st, the department has been authorized to hire and start a Police Cadet program. At this time, the program will be open to two Cadets.
Officer Lane spoke about the following topics;
- At the end of the month all sworn personnel will be trained on Narcan and invited those members interested in attending future dates, to send an email,
- St. Martins graduated the fifth grade class from D.A.R.E.,
- Sergeant Scarff and Officer Lane attended two different Active Shooter trainings and are now certified in ALICE and CRASE. The department has started conducting community presentations about Active Shooter.
- August 7th will be National Night Out and currently there are 12 communities registered.
II. COMMUNITY ROUNDTABLE:
1. David Weber advised that at the University of Maryland campus where he teaches are conducting Active Shooter training for staff and voiced concern about suspicious activity that he has heard about occurring in the businesses of Kentlands.
2. Diane Cabness voiced concern about recent criminal activity she was made aware of at the Gaithersburg Station Apartments. Police will look into the concerns.
3. Josh Fischer inquired about an update on the new police station.
4. John Monroe voiced concern about residents who engage in smoking marijuana in their respective apartments and similar incidents voiced by Diane.
5. Doug Wagner advised that there had been a theft of package but the package was retuned
a few days later.
6. Carol Martin voiced concern about vehicles parking on Norwich in violation of the “No Parking” signs and voiced concern about a possible abandoned vehicle parked in front of the First Watch.
7. All members voiced concern about traffic related violations throughout the City varying from stop signs to not stopping before making a right turn on red.
