CITY OF GAITHERSBURG: Host FCC-required Public Hearing for Comcast Franchise Renewal Application

Local gov stock 01

City of Gaithersburg issued the following announcement on June 26.

Comcast has applied to renew its cable franchise agreement with the City of Gaithersburg.

Federal law as set forth in the Cable Communications Policy Act of 1984, amended by the Cable Consumer Protection and Competition Act of 1992, allows for Comcast to seek renewal via an “informal” process.

As part of this process, Comcast is required to hold a public hearing to solicit feedback from Gaithersburg residents on Comcast’s performance, including compliance with the terms of the existing franchise; quality of service, including signal quality and response to consumer complaints and billing practices; and whether Comcast has the financial, legal and technical ability to provide existing services and respond to future cable-related community needs and interests.

This public hearing will be held during a regularly-scheduled City of Gaithersburg Mayor and City Council Work Session on Monday, July 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at 31 S. Summit Avenue.

Speakers will have up to three minutes to deliver in-person testimony. No advance registration is necessary.

Speakers can simply attend the meeting and wait their turn.

Testimony can also be provided via e-mail to cityhall@gaithersburgmd.gov.

Following this FCC-required public hearing, the Gaithersburg Mayor and City Council will consider Comcast’s application for franchise renewal.

That will also involve a public hearing per the City’s ordinance process.

Notice will be made once the date of that public hearing has been determined.

Please direct any questions to the City Manager’s Office.
