City of Gaithersburg issued the following announcement on June 18.
The membership of the Maryland Municipal League (MML) elected Gaithersburg City Council Vice President Ryan Spiegel as President-Elect at the organization’s annual conference in Ocean City, Maryland. Spiegel will automatically assume the presidency of MML following his one-year term as President-Elect.
“I am looking forward to working with the incoming President, Mayor Bridget Newton, and carrying on the tradition of strong leadership shown by outgoing President Jake Romanell,” said Spiegel. “I plan to invest in the same dynamic leadership, creative ideas and modern tactics that helped MML achieve all of its legislative priorities during the 2018 Maryland General Assembly.”
Spiegel served as MML’s statewide Legislative Committee Chair this past year, leading the effort to develop and implement a strategy that resulted in the restoration of guaranteed, predictable Highway User Revenues, a critical transportation funding source for all local governments in Maryland that MML has been working to restore for nine years. Other legislative priorities included amending the Maryland Public Information Act to protect the privacy of emails and cellphone numbers when residents sign up for e-newsletters and emergency alerts, and defeating a bill that would have preempted local authority to regulate permitting and siting for small cell telecommunication facilities in municipal rights-of-way.
MML represents the 157 cities and towns in Maryland, and the 1.5 million people who live in them. It advocates for municipal priorities in Annapolis, and as the association for mayors, council members and other municipal officials, it works to provide education, networking, research, and other resources and support services for both elected officials and staff.
