Town of Chevy Chase Climate and Environment Committee met June 12.

Here is the minutes provided by the Committee:

The climate and environment committee met on June 12, at 7 pm in the town hall. Present were Chandrani Ghosh, Elizabeth MacDonald, Susan Blacklow, and Scott Fosler, council liaison.

The topic of discussion was whether the town should join the Paris Climate Agreement. Although the United States had recently announced its decision to withdraw from the Agreement, states and municipalities within the U.S. were becoming signatories to the Agreement.

The Committee discussed the general parameters of the agreement and noted that because the town is a small municipality without, for example, industry or power generation, it was difficult to determine what changes the town could make to meet the goals of the agreement. Nonetheless, the committee's view was that the town should become a signatory, that the town should endeavor to find ways to meet the Agreement, and further that the town should make as much of an effort as possible to coordinate with other municipalities and state subdivisions (such as Montgomery County) in joining the Agreement at the local level because action on a larger scale would be more effective.

The committee adjourned at 8 pm.
