CITY OF GAITHERSBURG: Spend Summer in Olde Towne with New Family Program Series

City of Gaithersburg issued the following announcement on May 22.

The City of Gaithersburg debuts new family-friendly programming and events in Olde Towne with its Summer in the Garden and Summer at the Plaza series. Programs take place at Constitution Gardens, Olde Towne Plaza and the Gaithersburg Community Museum. Admission is free to all events.

Summer in the Garden

Enjoy free programs for young visitors ages two and older on the first Mondays in June, July and August from 10 to 11 a.m. at Constitution Gardens, 112 Brookes Avenue. Explore this unique nature play space and take part in music and dance programs. No registration necessary. For more information, contact the Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture.

June 4 - Tinkergarten

Tinkergarten brings families together in a natural place to help kids learn through play. Gather for circle time, and then choose from three different nature-themed activities organized by Tinkergarten instructors. Participate in as many as time permits.

July 2 - Powerhouse Brass from Pritchard Music – Kentlands

Pritchard Music offers lessons that build a foundation in music for a lifetime. Take a seat on the lawn and celebrate America’s independence with stirring marches and patriotic songs. Play games and even hum along to Yankee Doodle Dandy on the kazoo.

August 6 - Arthur Murray Dance Center of Gaithersburg

Arthur Murray Dance Center of Gaithersburg believes that learning to dance opens doors to improved health, closer relationships, and greater passion and joy in life. Learn to dance among the flowers to the sounds of swaying trees and a rambling stream.

Summer at the Plaza

Enjoy a variety of family-friendly programs at the Gaithersburg Community Museum, 9 South Summit Avenue, and the new Olde Towne Plaza, 1 South Summit Avenue. Programs are free; donations appreciated. For more information, contact the Gaithersburg Community Museum.

Train Day

Saturday, June 16, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Celebrate Gaithersburg’s long and storied railroad history. Enjoy N-Gauge model train displays presented by BANTRAK members, explore a caboose and RDC rail car, visit the 1918 steam locomotive in History Park, and participate in train-related activities. Silly Goose and Val will perform train songs between 1 & 2:30 p.m.

Montgomery County Heritage Days

Saturday & Sunday, June 23 & 24, Noon – 4 p.m.

Earth and space exploration are part of this year’s STEAM-based activities. Heritage Days, organized by Heritage Montgomery, is an annual event celebrating and showcasing the County’s rich history.

Live performances take place at 2 p.m.

Sunday - Flumpa and Friends Out of this World: A Space Odyssey

Inquiring Minds

Wednesdays, July 11 – August 15, 10:30 a.m. – Noon

A program of exploration for young visitors ages five and older, with a different hands-on activity each week.

Discovery Day: Water

Sunday, July 22, 1 – 4 p.m.

The Plaza’s new splash fountain provides a great opportunity to explore and have fun with water. Play in the fountain, do STEM activities, make water pictures, and more. Get ready to get wet!

Lending Library of Fun

Tuesday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Stop by the Museum to borrow games and toys to use in the Plaza. Items are available during Museum hours only.

Looking for more outdoor fun? Enjoy entertainment and activities all summer long at the City Hall Concert Pavilion. Heat up your exercise routine as you dance to the Latin rhythms of Zumba on Friday evenings through August. Experience uplifting Gospel music at the 12th Annual Jubilation Day Gospel Extravaganza on June 2. Develop your mind, body and spirit at Yoga in the Park on Tuesday evenings through August. Thursday Morning Kids Concerts delight parents and children alike June 7 through July 26. Wind down the work day with Thursday Evenings in Olde Towne in June, July and September.
