Town of Garrett Park issued the following announcement on July 25.
Hi Everyone,
I'm pleased to inform you that we'll be starting work to repair two sections of sidewalk (not part of the SRTS project) with Flexi-Pave, a porous material made of recycled tire and stone aggregate. The two sections we've selected for demonstration are the aged asphalt sidewalks that run along Waverly between the Waverly/Kenilworth triangle and Montrose; and Oxford between Montrose and Kenilworth. We purposely selected these demonstration sites so that residents on both sides of Town can experience this environmentally-friendly material.
As you may have heard at our recent Town Council meetings, both the Town Manager and I visited Arlington National Cemetery and the City of Takoma Park to experience firsthand their sidewalks with this material as well as to learn about any potential issues with maintenance. We’ve researched other areas that have used this material as well–multiple sites around the D.C. Metro area, American University (also a livable Arboretum), and Yellowstone National Park. All have expressed great success with it and said they’ve had no maintenance issues. Although more expensive than concrete or asphalt, consumers have told us they consider the use of Flexi-Pave in the long run to be a great return on investment; and like that they are being environmentally responsible. Easy to walk on, this material also helps mitigate storm water runoff by allowing the water to filter directly through it into the ground. –An ongoing issue we know we have in our Town. We also believe this material fits in with our own livable Arboretum!
I hope you’ll agree and take the opportunity to experience these new sidewalks. Our goal is to have the demonstration sites completed by the end of August--before the first day of school. We'll inform residents who live along these sidewalks and keep you all posted on the progress of this exciting demonstration.
Let's keep working together to make this a beautiful, safe, fun place to live. Please feel free to contact me at mayorkacky@garrettparkmd.gov if you have any questions or concerns.
Best,
Mayor Kacky
