TOWN OF CHEVY CHASE: Utility Work and Paving Update

Update450

Town of Chevy Chase issued the following announcement on July 11.

Washington Gas: The first phase of gas infrastructure upgrades is essentially complete. Washington Gas still needs to connect a few businesses on Wisconsin Avenue to the new gas mains but hasn’t been able to get the necessary State Highway Utility permit to allow this work to be completed. These businesses are being fed from an older gas main that runs through Town. This main can’t be abandoned until the new services are completed, probably in 2019.

Washington Gas has delayed the start of future service updates indefinitely. The Gas company had initially indicated that this work would commence in calendar year 2019 or 2020.

WSSC – Water Mains: WSSC’s water main replacement project is largely complete. Scheduled water main replacement still needs to be completed on Tarrytown Road and in the 4300 block of Thornapple Street. In addition, there are a fair number of concrete repairs and other punch list items to be completed by WSSC.

Looking forward, WSSC is in a design/engineering phase for a water main replacement project on Thornapple and Leland Streets between Connecticut Avenue and Meadow Lane. Once the design work is completed, the project will need to be approved by the Public Services Commission and will go through a lengthy procurement process before being released for construction, likely in calendar year 2019. We are trying to have the portion of the work in Town expedited.

WSSC – Sewer Mains: WSSC continues to complete sewer main replacements and relining at various locations in the Town. This work should be completed in the fall. The Town is not aware of future sewer repairs following this phase of work.

Town Road Repairs: The Town continues to perform paving and concrete repairs on streets where all utility work has been completed. The Town’s paving contractor will be in Town at the end of this week to repave some streets on the east side of Town. The Town will begin another batch of concrete repairs in August, with the hope of remobilizing the paving contractor in the early fall to complete more restoration. Unfortunately, some of this restoration work is being delayed as the utility companies have fallen behind the original construction schedules on East Avenue, Tarrytown Road, and Thornapple Street, preventing the Town from completing restoration work on adjoining streets. We are encouraging the utility companies to finish their work as quickly as possible.
