Baltimore City Health Department issued the following announcement on March 6.

The Baltimore City Health Department became aware of students enrolled in a private school in Baltimore who potentially had been in close contact with a person from out-of-state with confirmed COVID-19 disease. The Baltimore City Health Department has protocols in place to contain transmission of infectious diseases, including COVID-19, after a possible exposure. We immediately began our public health investigation in coordination with the Maryland Department of Health.

Protocols were followed and the students were promptly isolated and removed from the school while the investigation continued. Based on the public health investigation and following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance, the Maryland Department of Health and Baltimore City Health Department, have determined the school can stay open. We will continue to monitor the situation, and coordinate with the school.

The Baltimore City Health Department continues to closely monitor the COVID-19 virus and prepare for possible cases in Baltimore. Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. We recommend individuals who develop these symptoms stay home and call their medical provider.

Everyone can help by remembering to take everyday preventative actions that are always recommended to help stop the spread of respiratory viruses:

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds

• If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol

• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth

• Stay home when you are sick, except to get medical care

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces

• It is still cold and flu season, and it is not too late to get your flu shot.
