This annual awards program provides the business community with an opportunity to publicly thank those who help maintain the quality of life in the Gaithersburg and Germantown area.
Gaithersburg Police Officers John Duke and Nathan Provost were both presented with the Distinguished Service Citation for their dedication to duty and professionalism in a highly stressful situation.
On January 29, 2018, Gaithersburg Police Department and Montgomery County Police Department officers responded to the report of a fight at a playground. After the fight, the victim suffered a medical crisis from a pre-existing undetected medical condition and collapsed. Upon arrival, officers located the victim and CPR was initiated by Officers Duke and Provost along with Montgomery County Police Officer Bryan Volz. CPR was continued until Fire/Rescue arrived on the scene. The victim was revived and transported to Shady Grove Emergency Room where he was stabilized and then transferred by air to Children's Hospital in Washington, DC. The attending doctor at Shady Grove Emergency Room commented to officers and supervisors, “Whoever did CPR on this kid, saved his life.” After the medical treatment at the scene, the officers stayed to assist and gather valuable witness information and contain the crime scene for forensic services and detectives. Unfortunately, the victim passed away of his medical condition two weeks later.
Officers Duke and Provost, along with Officer Volz, quickly assessed the scene, evaluated the patient and provided emergency treatment to the victim. Their quick actions helped revive the victim and gave doctors an opportunity to save his life. Their actions reflected greatly on their training, their dedication to duty and professionalism that they showed in a highly stressful situation.
Officer David Bower was awarded the Meritorious Service Citation for his life-saving actions.
Officer Bower was first officer on-scene of a man in cardiac arrest at a private residence.
Upon arrival, Officer Bower found a 17 year-old girl attempting CPR on a large male patient. Officer Bower had her move to the side and quickly assessed the situation. He then made notifications over the radio and started CPR. After performing CPR, the patient started to breathe on his own; however, it was shallow and labored. As Officer Bower continued to monitor him, his heart stopped again. Officer Bower restarted CPR and continued until Fire Rescue arrived and took over. The Fire Rescue personnel were impressed with Officer Bower and stated the patient is alive today because of his actions.
