City of Gaithersburg issued the following announcement on May 24.
Four inspiring high school seniors were selected to receive a total of $10,300 in scholarship funds for the 2018-2019 academic year through the W. Edward Bohrer, Jr. Memorial CHARACTER COUNTS! Scholarship program.
Presented in partnership with the W. Edward Bohrer Memorial Fund, City of Gaithersburg Holiday Giving Donors, City of Gaithersburg Student Union, Gaithersburg Rotary Foundation, and Rodgers Consulting, Inc., the scholarships are named for former Mayor Bohrer, under whose leadership the City adopted the CHARACTER COUNTS! program in 1996. The program acknowledges students for embodying the Six Pillars of Character – trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
Since the scholarship program launched in 1998, 99 high school seniors have received more than $170,000 in CHARACTER COUNTS! funding to help with their college tuition. This year’s recipients are Kiara Navarrete Aguilar, Maria Del Rosario Contreras, Ivana Samuels and John Woodward, all students at Gaithersburg High School.
In their applications, students were asked to share stories of people who have inspired them and how those role models reflect good character. The following excerpts were taken from this year’s applications:
“My mom taught me to accept the best versions of people and allow to help those in need that not only help us, but are genuinely good, humble people that express the same pillars as we do.” – Kiara Navarrete Aguilar
“Maura Dinwiddie has taught me that helping the community not only gives someone a satisfactory feeling, but that one is able to change their community for the better.” – Maria Del Rosario Contreras
“One of my role models in my life includes my supervisor at the Gaithersburg High School Wellness Center, Veronica Stroman. Working alongside her has shaped me to embody the six pillars of character. My parents are also important role models as they’ve taught me how and why to embody the six characteristics. My parents’ commitment and hard work have shone through me to strive to carry the same characteristics they have placed in their everyday life. My internship employer from Liberty’s Promise, Julien Labiche, has revealed the six characteristics while we worked together during the summer.” – Ivana Samuels
“The most important role model in my life is Jesus because he has taught me to help others through giving, be kind to them (caring), respect them, listen to their concerns (fairness), and to be honest (trustworthiness), fulfill commitments (responsibility), and to defer to governments (citizenship).” – John Woodward
