City of Gaithersburg Department of Parks, Recreaton and Culture issued the following announcement on May 10.
Over a four-week period in March and April, 115 third grade students in five area elementary schools collectively spent more than 2,500 hours reading as they competed for top prize in the 9th Annual Mayor’s Book Club Reading Contest, held in conjunction with the Gaithersburg Book Festival.
Ms. Diane Hudson’s class from Laytonsville Elementary School won top honors, with students reading a collective 48,331 minutes, or just over 800 hours.
At a special ceremony at the Gaithersburg Book Festival, taking place on the grounds of City Hall on Saturday, May 19, Mayor Jud Ashman will recognize the winning class. The presentation will be held in the Ogden Nash Pavilion in the Children’s Village at 11:30 a.m.
Competition participants from Brown Station, Gaithersburg, Strawberry Knoll and Washington Grove Elementary Schools will also be recognized. All participating students are now members of the Mayor’s Book Club, and each will receive a Book Club certificate with a free kid’s meal from The Habit Burger Grill.
The Mayor will join the winning class before the end of the school year for a lunch party provided by Habit Burger Grill and the distribution of Book Club membership cards.
