CITY OF GAITHERSBURG: It’s a “September to Remember” at Arts on the Green

City of Gaithersburg issued the following announcement on Aug. 15.

End summer with a splash and kick off fall with Arts on the Green this September. The new performing arts season launches with two showstoppers, Hamiltunes: An American Sing-Along on September 7 and two Grease 40th Anniversary Film & Parties on September 8. Enjoy a mesmerizing cello performance by internationally-known Kentlands resident Tanya Anisimova on September 14. Sandy Spring Theatre Group brings the powerful story of Kindertransport to the Arts Barn stage September 15 – 23. The Manhattan Short Film Festival takes place on September 28 and 30. From workshops to art exhibits to sleight of hand, it’s a September to Remember at Arts on the Green.

Hamiltunes: An American Sing-Along

In partnership with DC Metro Theater Arts

September 7, 7 p.m. & bull; Arts Barn

Come in costume and join with other raucous revolutionaries, including celebrity guest, Mayor Jud Ashman, for this karaoke-style song-filled event that features music from the hit Broadway show, Hamilton.

Grease 40th Anniversary

September 8 • Arts Barn

Family Fun Party: 2 p.m., film screening 3 p.m.

Film & Brew Party: 6 p.m., film screening 7:30 p.m.

Grease is the word! Party like it’s the summer of 1958 at a special 40th anniversary celebration of the release of the hit movie, Grease. Dress up like your favorite character and brush up on your hand jive skills for a chance to win a prize. Singing along with the film is encouraged.

Kindertransport

In partnership with Sandy Spring Theatre Group

September 15 – 23 • Arts Barn

2018 marks the 80th anniversary of Kindertransport. The play tells a young girl’s account of the rescue effort of 10,000 refugee Jewish children from Nazi Germany prior to WWII. A special talkback with survivors will take place following the September 16 performance.

Cello, The Magician with Tanya Anisimova

September 14

7 p.m. – Kentlands Mansion Garden: Sunset Wine Tasting by The Wine Harvest

8 p.m. – Arts Barn: Concert followed by chocolate tasting by SPAGnVOLA

Experience the magic of the cello with well-known favorites, original compositions and Kodaly’s Sonata Opus 8. Kentlands resident Tanya Anisimova also improvises on spontaneous themes from the audience.

An exhibit featuring works that incorporate art processes and materials used in unexpected ways.

Kid’s Adventure in Glass Fusing Workshop

September 15, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.• Arts Barn

Explore the art of melting glass together.

Garden Gatherings: Garden Thyme

September 17, 4:30 – 6 p.m.• Kentlands Mansion

Learn about up-cycled gardening and plant a mini-herb garden to take home and enjoy.

Art Night Out: Amedeo Modigliani in Acrylic

September 21, 7 p.m. • Arts Barn

Professional artist Bill Mapes kicks off the autumn season with a talk and project inspired by Amedeo Modigliani, an artist known for his modern portraiture style. Enjoy wine or beer while Mapes discusses this unconventional artist, then create your own project.

Fall Leaves Family Workshop

September 23, 1:30 p.m. • Arts Barn

Create autumn inspired art and craft projects as a family.

Manhattan Short Film Festival

September 28 & 30, 7:30 p.m. • Arts Barn

100,000 film lovers unite in more than 300 cinemas across the world to view and vote on selected short films. Winner is eligible for Oscar nomination.

Danny Rouhier, Standup Comic

September 29, 8 p.m. • Arts Barn

This fast-paced, clever and self-deprecating comedian has performed at Caroline's on Broadway and The DC Improv. He cohosts the top midday show in DC on WJFK 106.7 The Fan. His show is appropriate for ages 15 and older.

The Arts Barn, 311 Kent Square Road, and Kentlands Mansion, 320 Kent Square Road, are Arts on the Green, the City of Gaithersburg’s home for the performing and visual arts. Patrons at both venues enjoy a wide range of quality theater, music and art programs.
