CITY OF GAITHERSBURG: Explore Mixed Media Exhibit at Kentlands Mansion and Arts Barn

Exhibit

City of Gaithersburg issued the following announcement on Aug. 14.

Arts on the Green presents “Exploring Mixed Media,” an exhibit featuring works that incorporate art processes and materials used in unexpected ways. The exhibit kicks off the fall gallery season and is on display at Kentlands Mansion September 7 through November 4 and at the Arts Barn September 14 through November 19. The public is invited to meet the artists at a free reception taking place in each venue on Thursday, September 27 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

“Mixed Media” refers to a visual art form that combines a variety of media such as paper, paint, ink and textures into a single artwork.

Featured artists in the Kentlands Mansion exhibit include Betsy K. Baden, Donna Baron, Jeff Bohlander, Marylou Bono, Jasmine Bryant, Laura Davis, Sandra Davis, Jabari Jefferson, Roxana Rojas Luzon, Michael Kuchinsky, Steve Mockrin, Karen Peacock, Michelle Puhl-Price, Shyam Rele, James Russell, Linda Slattery-Sherman, Eneida Somarriba, Francine Stowe-Sinkler, Jeanne Sullivan, Jenna Wright, and Alexey Zoob.

The artists offer a wide variety of mixed media solutions and experiments featuring found objects and cloth adhered to paint, colored pencil and ink, mixed media printing techniques, tooled plaster, glassworks, and two-dimensional wood assemblages.

Works by Rebecca Grace-Jones, Phyllis Mayes, Meg Schaap, Thomas Sterner, and Cathy Wilkin will be on display at the Arts Barn.

Rebecca Grace-Jones is nationally known for her whimsical, intuitive paintings that often juxtapose houses, birds and cats in intriguing spatial compositions.

Phyllis Mayes is known for her symbolic, somewhat surreal paintings on panels. She also enjoys creating three-dimensional assemblage pieces, three of which will be on display in this exhibit. The pieces incorporate everyday objects in unique ways and are pulled together through monochromatic paint.

While Meg Schaap enjoys painting, she has created a series of historically-based dresses from the Marie Antoinette period and more recent times. The dresses stand five-feet tall and are made out of magazines, colored plastic cellophane and other found materials.

Thomas Sterner is an accomplished woodworker who enjoys mixing relief wood pieces with painted imagery and mirrors. His themes are often based on nature.

Cathy Wilkin creates large, vivacious and colorful collages incorporating themes from nature, symbolism, life events and whimsy.

Located at 320 Kent Square Road, the Mansion Gallery offers the opportunity to view art in the beautiful, timeless setting of this historic estate. Due to frequent rentals for private events, viewing hours are by appointment only, Monday through Friday. Please call the Mansion prior to your visit.

The Arts Barn Gallery is located at 311 Kent Square Road. Viewing hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 1:30 to 5 p.m.

Please note that most of the artwork is for sale and all images are copyrighted by the artists.
