City of Gaithersburg Senior Advisory Committee met April 10.

1. Call To Order

The Regular Session of the Senior Advisory Committee was called to order at 1:00 PM with Member Carolyn Bass presiding.

2. Approval Of Minutes

A. Regular Session held March 5, 2018

3. Discussion Topics

A. Staff Update

Chair appreciated the description of staff duties in the Monthly News.

Membership and attendance to the Benjamin Gaither Center (BGC) and Fitness Center were discussed.

As requested in the previous meeting, budget information was distributed and explained in detail.

Council Sayles suggested Committee attend or join the Commission on Aging to bring back updates on the current services provided for the County's older residents.

B. Presentation - City Classes

Program Supervisor Denise Mornini, Parks, Recreation & Culture spoke about the classes offered for all ages and all levels at City facilities. She also explained City of Gaithersburg residents 55 or older gets the Senior Resident discounted rate of 60-65% for select classes and distributed the ‘Go Gaithersburg’ Guide. Free family friendly outdoor classes and activities are also offered at Bohrer Park and City Hall.

Committee asked if a ‘Meditation’ class can be offered during the day at the Center. Denise offered to send contact information to BGC Program Supervisor Charlyn Simpson.

C. Center services for low-income seniors

Committee asked if the City could provide a one-stop shop for health and wellness where low income seniors can find assistance for various services via website or a booklet. Smith informed Committee that a Social Worker from Montgomery County Health & Human Services and a County Seniors’ Resource Guide were available at the Center.

Inquiries are also referred to the City’s Community Services Department. Committee requested inviting Maureen Herndon, Division Manager of Community Services to give a talk at the next meeting.

D. For the Good of the Order

Chair suggested Committee visit other senior centers to brainstorm ideas for improving the décor of the center.

Chair also requested the list of volunteers be printed on colored paper for the various booths at the Active Aging Expo and access to upfront parking.

Committee enquired about the new bus. Smith reported it was being built and we will have it by summer.

4. Adjournment

There being no further business, the session was adjourned at 2:30 PM
