CITY OF GAITHERSBURG: Arts on the Green 2018-2019 Music Season Kicks Off September 14 with Kentlands Resident Tanya Anisimova

City of Gaithersburg issued the following announcement on Aug. 19.

Gaithersburg’s Arts on the Greenpresents a new season of engaging concerts featuring an eclectic mix of Americana, jazz, classical, contemporary, traditional, and world music in an intimate and inviting setting. Enjoy authentic music and lively conversation as well as special workshops before select performances. The series is sponsored by Hampton Inn and Suites.

Cello, the Magician with Tanya Anisimova

September 14

7 p.m. – Kentlands Mansion Garden: Sunset Wine Tasting by The Wine Harvest

8 p.m. – Arts Barn: Concert followed by chocolate tasting by SPAGnVOLA

Internationally-known musician and Kentlands resident, Tanya Anisimova launches the new performing arts season with a dazzling evening of music. Anisimova reveals the magic of the cello with her solo program, including well-known favorites, original compositions and Kodaly’s celebrated sonata for solo cello. Participate in the performance as she improvises on spontaneous themes from the audience.

Sound Underground, Jazz Trio

New York City’s jazz trio, Sound Underground, draws on a broad array of influences from cool jazz, Americana, folk and avant-garde to create a unique and deeply personal sound.

Trisha Gene Brady is a roots musician from Knoxville, known best for her seven year run as female vocalist (guitar, mandolin, percussion) for the nationally touring act, The Black Lillies. She is taking the next step in her career as a solo artist and has recently completed her first solo EP.

Cool Yule with Lena Seikaly

Enjoy holiday favorites and endearing originals with Lena Seikaly, one of Washington’s preeminent jazz singers. Lena is making her mark as both a revivalist of traditional jazz vocals as well as an innovator in contemporary vocal jazz styles.

Virtuosic Violin, Alessandra Cuffaro & Simeone Tartaglione

Renowned violinist Alessandra Cuffaro plays an exciting program of Paganini, Kreisler and Sarasate. Cuffaro is recognized worldwide as the first Italian woman to perform all 24 of Paganini’s Capricci, a collection of exceedingly difficult violin pieces, in one concert. She is recognized as one of the most prominent Italian American performers of our time and plays alongside her husband, pianist and conductor Simeone Tartaglione.

Schumann and Brahms, Chamber Music and Chocolate

Experience two masterworks of piano quartet repertoire by the New Orchestra of Washington, featuring Grace Cho (piano) and members of the Aeolus Quartet, including Rachel Shapiro (violin), Caitlin Lynch (viola), and Alan Richardson (cello). Learn about Clara and Robert Schumann’s love story while you enjoy exquisite chocolates by chocolatier SPAGnVOLA and carefully paired wines before and during the concert.

Tim Whalen Quintet, Jazz

March 2, 8 p.m.

Exceptional jazz pianist Tim Whalen and his quintet bring a night of musical conversation in the true language of jazz to the Arts Barn stage. Tim is an in-demand jazz pianist, composer and arranger whose passion and dedication to his art come through in everything he touches.

Guitar Poetry with Hiroya Tsukamoto

International acclaimed guitarist and songwriter Hiroya Tsukamoto takes us on an innovative, impressionistic journey filled with earthy, organic soundscapes that impart a mood of peace and tranquility. His music has been described as cinematic guitar poetry, drawing on the rich history of stories, poetry and Japanese folk.

The LYNNeS, Folk Americana

The LYNNeS are award winning songwriters Lynn Miles and Lynne Hanson. The two heartbreak poets are multi-instrumentalists (piano, acoustic, electric guitar, mandolin), fusing tight vocal harmonies with hauntingly gritty lyrics and humor. The two songwriters play off each other in a live setting and have been known to leave the audience in stitches with their between-song banter.

Marimba and Friends with Robert Schroyer

May 11, 8 p.m.

Experience the versatility of the marimba with Robert Schroyer, New Orchestra of Washington’s Principal Percussionist and prize-winning soloist, as he plays Astor Piazzola, Anna Ignatowitcz and Kevin Puts.

Jon Steele Trio

June 1, 8 p.m.

Experience the soundscapes and grooves of the Jon Steele Trio as the group plays original jazz compositions and arrangements. Jon is a busy bass player based in DC, working with many of the city’s great jazz musicians and artists from all over the world, including Chiek Hamala Diabate, Huda Asfour, Broto Roy, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Louise Mandrell, Ju Ju House.

Singer Songwriter Showcase

July 13, 8 p.m.

Enjoy new music by on-the-verge artists as select winners of the 2019 Mid-Atlantic Song Contest perform their winning songs and other originals and arrangements.

* Singer Songwriter Concert Series: Experience inspiring performances and explore your creativity with this series presented by O’Hair Salon + Spa. It celebrates musicians who write, compose and sing their own original material. In addition to the concert experience, patrons can participate in special workshops with the artists for a unique insight into the world of the singer songwriter. Local musicians will be featured before the nationally and internationally known headliners.

Attendees to all performances are invited to come early and enjoy wine by the glass, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages in a bistro setting. The Arts Barn Pub is open one hour before the show and during intermission.

The Arts Barn, 311 Kent Square Road, and Kentlands Mansion, 320 Kent Square Road, are Arts on the Green, the City of Gaithersburg’s home for the performing and visual arts. Patrons at both venues enjoy a wide range of quality theater, music and art programs.
