City of Gaithersburg issued the following announcement on May 23.
In addition to a wide variety of art camps, the Arts Barn is offering weekend workshops for families, older teens and adults so everyone can get creative this summer.
A series of family workshops meets on a weekend day once a month, each featuring a new theme. Kids ages three and up, along with a parent or guardian, can spend an hour in the studio creating fun projects. Everything is provided; just bring your own imagination. The cost is $15 per child; admission for accompanying adults is free. The June 17 workshop is on Father’s Day, when everything will be all about gifts for Dad. The July 21 workshop celebrates patriotism with all things made in red, white or blue. On August 11, we go on vacation – without leaving home. The session’s projects will be inspired by a trip to the shore.
Also at the Arts Barn are “Art Night Outs,” taking place on Friday evenings throughout the year. The summer lineup includes “Wine & Improv” on June 15, “Georges Seurat & Pointillism” in ink on July 20, and “Wine & Shakespeare” on August 17, with participants exploring the light and comedic works of our favorite bard. These workshops are for ages 21 & up. Wine and snacks are included in the registration fee.
The “Topics in Painting” series continues with three sessions that allow artists to delve deeper into their art. Workshops on July 14 and 15, led by accomplished plein aire artist Tom Semmes, focus on capturing light. On July 22, long-time instructor and gifted artist, Firouzeh Sadeghi, will be demonstrating how to capture the movement of waterfalls in watercolor. A special “art camp” for adults is planned the week of August 6. For five afternoons, Shirin Badie will lead participants through exercises that show how watercolor painting can help reduce stress.
On July 7, performing artists can work on their British dialects with Stephanie Phelan. On July 28, Craig Higgins returns to our studio, demonstrating how to capture beautiful photographic close-ups using a camera’s macro features. On August 4, resident artist Jack Donnelly will open the Arts Entwine studio and share the metal working technique of hammer forming. Students will be creating a small bowl in copper.
Registration for all classes, camps and workshops is available online here.
