City of Gaithersburg issued the following announcement on May 18.
The Gaithersburg Community Museum and Boy Scout Troop 1760 will hold a Flag Day Ceremony on Thursday, June 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the City Hall Concert Pavilion, 31 South Summit Avenue in Olde Towne. The Gaithersburg High School Pep Band will perform before the ceremony and Mayor Jud Ashman will deliver remarks reflecting on the meaning of our country’s symbol.
Proper disposal of the American flag is an important part of honoring its significance. Anyone with a flag in need of retirement may bring it to the Community Museum between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. June 1 through 14.
National Flag Day celebrates the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777. It was established by the proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. June 14 was designated as the official day of observance by an Act of Congress signed by President Harry S. Truman in 1949.
