Sterling Care Bethesda ranked as the third largest nursing home in Montgomery County during the first quarter of 2026, data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) shows.

The facility offered 200 beds, surpassing the Montgomery County average by 64 beds at the start of 2026. The center cared for an average of 172 residents per day throughout the quarter.

The CMS gave Sterling Care Bethesda an overall rating of 3 out of 5, which was below the Maryland statewide average of 3.1 for nursing homes.

Hebrew Home of Greater Washington led the county in size with 558 available beds for the quarter, while Wilson Health Care Center held second place with its 285 beds.

Sterling Care Bethesda recorded no fines or penalties in the first quarter of 2026.

Montgomery County was home to 28 for-profit nursing homes as of that period.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate the nation’s older adult population continues rising while younger population groups see declines. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans age 65 and older grew by 13%, contrasted with a 1.7% decrease in those under 18. Over the past 100 years, the older adult population in the United States expanded greatly, from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.

A study released in 2021 estimates that about half of adults in this group, around 28 million, may need long-term services and supports. The same research projects that more than a third of them could eventually require nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education nonprofit. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
