Rep. Jamie Raskin, who represents Maryland’s 8th district in the U.S. Congress, has used his social media platform to address issues ranging from healthcare subsidies to book bans in schools and libraries.
On October 8, 2025, Raskin highlighted the potential impact of proposed cuts to Affordable Care Act (ACA) insurance subsidies on his constituents, writing, “My constituent Cheryl runs a boxing gym in Rockville that helps people with Parkinson’s disease gain strength. If Republicans in Congress cut ACA insurance subsidies, Cheryl will be forced to make tough decisions on whether she can keep serving our community.”
Later the same day, Raskin addressed book bans, stating, “Democrats are fighting back against Trump and MAGA’s authoritarian book bans. Today, @SenBrianSchatz and I are introducing a resolution to protect the right to read at schools, libraries and universities across the country.”
On October 9, 2025, Raskin continued his focus on book bans and government actions, posting, “Today, @SenBrianSchatz and I are calling for an end to the nearly 23,000 MAGA book bans in our schools. Trump and Republicans in Congress regularly obscure, distort and hide the truth. Now, they’ve even shutdown the government. But Democrats are fighting back.”
Raskin has served in Congress since 2017, succeeding Chris Van Hollen. Before his tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives, he served in the Maryland Senate from 2007 to 2016. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1962, Raskin resides in Takoma Park and holds degrees from Harvard University and Harvard Law School.
