Rep. Jamie Raskin, who represents Maryland’s 8th district in the U.S. Congress, recently highlighted local initiatives and commented on federal governance through a series of posts on his official social media account.
On August 29, 2025, Raskin recognized individuals from his district as part of a Labor Day acknowledgment: “Our Labor Day MD-08 Local Heroes are Craig Becker & Ann Rosenthal. When he was General Counsel at AFL-CIO, Craig launched the Rise Up: Legal Defense Network, matching federal workers sacked by Trump & DOGE with free legal support & direction. Ann is a volunteer in the project.” This message spotlights efforts to provide legal assistance to federal workers affected by past administration policies.
Later that day, Raskin addressed budgetary powers and presidential responsibilities in another post: “Congress—and only Congress—passes budgets. Because the president’s job is to take care the laws are faithfully executed, he must spend the money as directed. Trump’s ‘pocket recissions’ are lawless and absurd. If a president opposes legislative spending decisions, he can veto”. The statement underscores his view on constitutional roles regarding fiscal policy.
On August 30, 2025, Raskin discussed public health measures amid ongoing debates about infectious diseases: “American federalism goes to work. As RFK Jr. heads down the road of more measles, more COVID-19 and more flu, public health states must develop our own strategies to stay safe.”
Jamie Raskin has served in Congress since 2017 after succeeding Chris Van Hollen. He previously held office in Maryland’s state legislature between 2007 and 2016 and has lived for many years in Takoma Park after being born in Washington D.C., according to congressional records. Raskin graduated from Harvard University with both undergraduate and law degrees.
