Rep. Jamie Raskin, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 8th district since 2017, posted a series of statements on social media criticizing recent actions by MAGA Republicans regarding the federal government shutdown and cuts to health care funding.

On September 30, 2025, Raskin wrote, “Trump and MAGA have been dismantling every part of the government they can’t profit from directly: USAID, NIH, NOAA, CFPB, Depts. of Education and State. Democrats are in DC fighting to keep the government open and to protect people’s health care. The GOP’s AWOL.”

In another post early on October 1, he stated, “MAGA Republicans just shut the government down rather than reverse their savage cuts to the health care of our people. Cut out the stupid racist videos & let’s pass federal funding which keeps the people healthy & our government going. My full statement:” He provided a link for further information.

Later that morning, Raskin added, “MAGA’s government shutdown was totally avoidable, and I will keep fighting hard to get government back open. In the meantime, my team and I have put together a dedicated resource page to help your family navigate this rocky time.”

Jamie Raskin has represented Maryland’s 8th District in Congress since replacing Chris Van Hollen in 2017. Prior to his current role in Congress, he served in both the Maryland House of Representatives and the Maryland Senate from 2007 to 2016. Born in Washington D.C. in 1962 and currently residing in Takoma Park at age 60, Raskin holds degrees from Harvard University (BA) and Harvard Law School (JD).

The posts come amid ongoing debates over federal funding and highlight partisan divisions over issues such as health care spending and government operations.
