Representative Jamie Raskin, who serves Maryland’s 8th district in the U.S. Congress, recently used his social media platform to comment on Congressional authority and legislative actions related to federal spending and high-profile investigations.

On July 21, 2025, Raskin posted: “The Constitution gives Congress the power of the purse. The president’s job is to ‘faithfully execute’ the decisions we’ve made and he has signed into law. He may not impound, redirect or confiscate money outside federal law.”

Later that day, Raskin addressed former President Donald Trump’s policy record and public promises in another post: “Trump never promised to rip Medicaid health care away from 17 million Americans. But he did.

What he did promise was to release the Epstein files to expose a child sex ring by the rich and powerful. But suddenly, the self-proclaimed ‘most transparent administration in history'”

On July 22, 2025, Raskin criticized House Speaker Johnson for his handling of legislative proceedings: “Speaker Johnson would rather cancel all votes & hearings than simply have a vote on bipartisan legislation demanding release of the Epstein files, something he, Trump & Bondi have been demanding for months! A pathetic new low in political cowardice & legislative malpractice.”

Jamie Raskin has represented Maryland’s 8th District since 2017 after succeeding Chris Van Hollen. Before joining Congress, he served in both chambers of Maryland’s state legislature between 2007 and 2016. Born in Washington D.C., Raskin graduated from Harvard University with a BA in 1983 and earned his JD from Harvard Law School in 1987. He currently resides in Takoma Park.
