Representative Jamie Raskin, who serves Maryland’s 8th congressional district in the U.S. Congress, has recently used his social media platform to comment on government operations and political tensions surrounding a government shutdown.

On October 1, 2025, Raskin posted: “Team Maryland believes government must be an instrument for the health and common good of the people even if MAGA uses it as an instrument for self-enrichment.

Democrats are fighting to get government back open and secure the health care benefits and rights of all the people. https://t.co/ANpxITZPe1

Later that day, he addressed those observing a Jewish holiday by writing: “To all observing Yom Kippur, I wish you an easy fast and a meaningful holiday during these tough times. G’mar Chatimah Tovah.” (October 1, 2025).

On October 2, 2025, Raskin criticized actions taken by the Trump Administration regarding communications about the ongoing government shutdown: “The Trump Admin is using government websites and the emails of civil servants to promote blatantly partisan propaganda about the government shutdown.

This is an intolerable abuse of power and a form of bureaucratic identity theft from federal workers. https://t.co/KkaIkf16FZ

Jamie Raskin has represented Maryland’s 8th District in Congress since replacing Chris Van Hollen in 2017. Before joining Congress, he served in both chambers of Maryland’s state legislature between 2007 and 2016. Born in Washington D.C. in 1962 and currently residing in Takoma Park at age 60, Raskin holds both undergraduate and law degrees from Harvard University.
