Congressman Brett Guthrie, Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, and Congressman Bob Latta, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Energy, announced on April 15 a hearing titled “Nuclear Regulatory Commission: Oversight of Activities, Priorities, and Fiscal Year 2027 Budget.”
The hearing is scheduled for April 22 at 10:00 AM ET in the Rayburn House Office Building. It will be open to the public and press, with a live stream available online. The session aims to provide members an opportunity to hear directly from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) about its activities, priorities, and budget plans for fiscal year 2027.
Chairmen Guthrie and Latta said, “Nuclear energy plays a critical role in our nation’s energy security, delivering the reliable power generation our families and businesses need and helping to establish our nation as a global leader in energy production. This hearing will provide our members the opportunity to hear firsthand from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on issues ranging from implementation of the ADVANCE Act and the President’s executive orders to the licensing of advanced reactors, as well as the steps the Commission is taking to ensure its regulatory processes are efficient, predictable, and supportive of American energy dominance.”
Ho K. Nieh, Chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, is scheduled to testify before the committee. Nieh said that bipartisan leadership through the ADVANCE Act is guiding modernization efforts within NRC’s regulatory framework. He said that “the NRC’s safety mission remains our top priority,” while also emphasizing that enabling safe use of nuclear technologies through efficient regulation is part of their mandate.
Nieh outlined recent actions by NRC including finalizing Part 53 regulations, issuing permits for advanced reactor construction and fuel fabrication facilities, renewing operating licenses for reactors, launching a fusion regulatory framework, and preparing draft rules under Executive Order 14300. He said these actions show that timely regulatory decisions can align with strong safety standards.
Further details about this upcoming hearing can be found in the organization’s press release.
