During the first quarter of 2026, Hebrew Home of Greater Washington held the distinction of being the largest nursing home in Montgomery County, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
The facility offered 558 beds, which is 422 more than the county average for the period. On average, 378.2 residents received care at the center during that time.
CMS gave Hebrew Home of Greater Washington an overall 5 out of 5 rating, surpassing Maryland’s state nursing home average of 3.1.
Wilson Health Care Center was the county’s second largest nursing home for the quarter, providing 285 beds. Sterling Care Bethesda was third, with 200 beds available.
Hebrew Home of Greater Washington did not incur any fines or penalties for the first quarter of 2026.
Montgomery County, Maryland, reported a total of six nonprofit nursing homes.
U.S. Census Bureau estimates show the country’s older adult population continues to rise while younger groups decline. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans age 65 and older increased by 13%, as the under-18 population decreased by 1.7%. The U.S. older adult population has expanded considerably over the last century, growing from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.
A 2021 study estimated that about half of these older adults—around 28 million people—may need long-term services and support. The same research projects more than a third could eventually require nursing home care.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education group. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
