Cost of college increased for all University of Maryland-College Park students during 2022-23 school year

For the 2022-23 academic year, in-state tuition at the University of Maryland-College Park rose by 2.5%, as revealed in the latest report, according to the latest disclosure from the National Center for Education Statistics.

Maryland residents paid $11,233 to attend the four-year public university this year, an increase of $278 from the $10,955 charged during the 2021-22 academic year.

Non-resident students paid 251.4% more than in-state students in 2022-23, with tuition totaling $39,469. This represents a 2.2% increase from $38,636 in the previous year.

Approximately 72% of the undergraduate student body at the university are Maryland residents, while about 26% come from other states and 2% are international students.

Data indicates that 65% of full-time undergraduates who enrolled in 2022-23 received some form of financial aid. A total of 3,017 students were awarded grants or scholarships amounting to $36.6 million, and 1,362 students borrowed over $12.9 million in student loans.

Among all undergraduates, 14,997 students received grants or scholarships totaling $184.5 million. Additionally, 6,887 students took out federal student loans amounting to $43.4 million.

Undergraduate education costs have seen a significant increase over the past few decades. Data shows a 169% rise in the average total cost, including tuition, fees, room, and board, between 1980 and 2020.

According to a 2023 College Board report, in-state students at public universities paid an average of $11,260, while out-of-state students paid $29,150 in the 2023-24 academic year.

Meanwhile, student loan debt has steadily increased over the last 30 years, reaching $1.75 trillion in 2024, averaging a total of $28,950 per borrower. Federal loans make up 92% of the debt, with over half of students at both public and private four-year colleges graduating with student loans.
