City of Gaithersburg Department of Parks, Recreaton and Culture issued the following announcement on May 14.

Gospel music, the uniquely American art form that gave rise to jazz, blues, R&B, and rock and roll, will be celebrated in all of its glory as the City of Gaithersburg presents the 12th Annual Jubilation Day Gospel Concert Extravaganza. On Saturday, June 2, 2018, from 4 to 8 p.m., the Concert Pavilion at City Hall will host performances of all styles of Gospel and Christian music by local and regional artists.

This year’s featured performer is Elder Boykin & the Ministers of Praise, a local group established in November 2011 by Elder Boykin and comprised of members from various churches in the Washington Metro area. Since its formation, Elder Boykin and Ministers of Praise have performed at various churches throughout Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The group’s newest CD release, “God Gave Me a Second Chance,” can be heard throughout the Washington Metro area.

Special commemorative t-shirts celebrating Jubilation Day are available for purchase for $10. Size quantities are limited. T-shirts can be purchased in advance at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park, 506 South Frederick Avenue (next to Gaithersburg High School), with cash, check or major credit card (no American Express). They can also be purchased at the event with cash only. The celebration will also feature food and crafts for purchase and raffle drawings for fun prizes. Winners must be present.

Gaithersburg’s Concert Pavilion is located at 31 South Summit Avenue in front of City Hall. Admission to Jubilation Day is free. The outdoor venue features lawn seating with limited chairs. Please feel free to bring your own low chair or blanket. The event is sponsored in part by the Maryland State Arts Council, Allied Party Rentals, Backyard Inflatables and Subway of Olde Towne.

Gaithersburg’s outdoor concert season includes weekly performances for children on Thursday mornings at 10:30 a.m. and evening performances featuring a variety of musical styles on Thursday evenings starting at 6 p.m. Both series begin the first week of June at the City Hall Concert Pavilion in Olde Towne.
